Design treasure buildings for a variety of gameplay in Hood: Outlaws and Legends

In Hood: outlaw and legends, you play as an outlaw, determined to undermine the oppressive state by stealing its wealth and returning it to the people. The state keeps treasure chests in huge buildings, secured inside locked vaults.

The state is an organized and powerful governing body. The three types of treasury buildings represent its three arms: the church represents the state’s control over religion, the garrison its military and the imposing keep represents its oppression of the people.

To show this, we incorporated brutalist elements and took inspiration from modern regimes to incorporate them into the design of medieval buildings. Each building has its own personality and gameplay, from the towering spiers and claustrophobic catacombs of the church, to the functional but opulent rooms of the garrison.

Treasure buildings dominate the skyline and are landmarks that help you navigate. This is important, as your first objective is to find the Sheriff and collect his Vault Key. Each of the maps is much larger than the treasure buildings alone, and the sheriff will be patrolling somewhere outside – but you won’t know where. Be careful though! Another group of outlaws has the same goal.

Once the key is stolen, the building becomes your destination. The treasure chest is inside somewhere, a different place each time you play. Not only that, but some maps contain more than one treasure building. Citadel – the state capital – contains all three! Searching for a treasure chest can sometimes be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Fortunately, if your team gets the key from the sheriff, you’ll also know the location of the vault it belongs to.

We wanted to give players a reason to explore the vault buildings, but we didn’t want them to be a maze. Often your goal is displayed as an icon on the screen, but you don’t know how to get there.

With the variations that take place with each game, there is no correct path through the building. And while a church can be on more than one map, there are different ways to get in and out of the building, as well as different accessible floors and different places where treasure rooms might be. We needed players to be able to enter a building from any direction, get to wherever the treasure chest is, and exit again to one of the extraction points in the world. We wanted players to “have confidence” that the most intuitive route would get them where they needed to go, so even new players could find their objective while avoiding the guards and ambushing other players.

Systematically, we went around each side of the building and inside each room asking: “If I am here, how can i get the?“We pointed the camera at each destination and found places to put a new door in sight, trying to make sure there was always an obvious path that would take you closer to your goal, wherever it was. find. We also sealed some of them, because too many choices can be as bad as too little.

Through play testing, we found that large rooms were better for the game than narrow hallways. An open space allows players to see more of the surroundings, and it’s easier to spot the distinctive vault door from a distance. They’re best for stealth, being able to ambush enemies crouching behind tables or statues, and hand-to-hand combat, which requires space to position and dodge.

We decided that the interior of a building should only contain a few large rooms and that each room should look unique. The keep, for example, was designed around three enormous atriums: an entrance hall, a dining room and a storeroom. Balconies and staircases surround them so that you can see landmarks in the room, such as the golden face of the king statue that dominates the entrance hall, as well as less stealthy guards and opponents. .

Verticality is a strong theme in our game, but it can be confusing. You know the treasure chest is one floor above you – but which door or passage do you have to go through to reach it?

Again, we wanted players to have confidence that obvious routes will get them where they want to go. We have made a rule: if you have to go up, any stairs will lead you to your goal. If you need to take the safe to a downstairs exit, any descending stairs are okay. You should never be taken further from your goal by doing this.

The stairs shouldn’t be hard to find either – it should only take a few seconds to spot an exit when you have the trunk. It seems obvious in hindsight, but it took careful planning. It is very easy to place stairs at the end of long hallways or in corners. Of course, experienced players can learn better routes, such as ropes for sliding or a ladder for climbing.

All of these features make every game Hood: outlaw and legends a different experience and the design of the treasury buildings to do this job was challenging but satisfying.
