Dragon Age began its Thedas story in 2009 with BioWare’s Dragon Age: Origins. Dark Horse’s new comic book series, Dragon Age: Dark Fortress, is a story deeply rooted where it all began. In the first issue of the last series, Fenris (who we met in Dragon Age 2) returns after the Blue spectrum comics to team up with a small group of Inquisition in an all-out assault on a fortress that harbors unspeakable evil. The first issue begins to reflect on the infamous betrayal against King Cailan, which we witnessed at the start of Origins, and continues with Fenris confronting her own past with her former master, Danarius.
We have an exclusive first look at the first issue of the new Dark fortress Dark Horse series, starting with a flashback to the betrayal of the King of Fereldan and the Gray Wardens in Ostagar:

The problem begins with the notorious moment Loghain became a traitor against the Gray Guardians, a move that left Cailan dead and abandoned. Cailan was the son of Maric, Loghain’s friend and the former King of Fereldan, and the complicated story between the two provided a tumultuous shade in the game and was explored in more detail in the companion novel. The problem continues with Ser Aaron waking up from his dream about the horrific turn of events that started Origins and brings us back to the present with Fenris, Marius, Francesca, and Tessa at camp preparing for the assault on the fortress of Castellum Tenebris. to Tevinter:

In the third panel seen above, the group dynamics continue to shift from the events previously seen in Blue spectrum, with a Fenris more in line with how he eventually became towards the end of Dragon Age 2: more grounded in himself, confident in his identity as a free man (more of a slave) and more open to letting people in. . Some had a problem with the way this character was portrayed in Blue spectrum because it strongly implied that he had been abandoned by the friends he had made in Kirkwall. This creative turn hit especially hard on those who fell in love with him because his romance is arguably the most difficult but also incredibly rewarding for how much he opens up.
Dark fortress seems to bring him back to a more open character, both with him asking how to help Aaron and his attempt at lightness with Marius. When he makes a joke (his humor has always been dry) about the angst shared within the group, a soft smile can be seen on his face. A look of sadness and connection failure is immediately seen afterward when his attempt to reach out is met with silence.
The story continues with a focus on Castellum Tenebris, the fortress which is at the center of this new story. Once again, this comic continues to offer a closer look at Tevinter society with Magisters once again plotting for more power through the exploitation of the red lyrium (you can find out more here). As devilish as ever, which is not the case with all magisteries as seen in Dorian Pavus’ (Inquisition) continuing storyline in the Nights Tevinter anthology alongside Maeveris Tilani, the intrigue for the control of Thedas continues under the name Fenris and co. race to put an end to these nefarious plans:

The only thing I love about Dark Horse comics is the artistic composition. When Maeveris was first introduced into the Those who speak funny, I fell in love with her. He’s an incredibly strong character who is actually linked to Varric Tethras, the rogue storyteller we all know and love. The art style has remained the same in most of the comics, and while Mae and Dorian weren’t the only “good Vints” from the land of bloodmagic and slavery, the comics did a good job. to subtly shift the reader’s attention to who is “good” and who is “bad” with subtle color changes and slanted lines. It’s very prevalent in this first issue, especially the dude who looks like a corpse but still acts like he’s the hottest thing around. I hope this fictional character feels me rolling my eyes at him.

The exclusive final preview we saw above shows the crew preparing for action. When strategizing how to best infiltrate this notoriously impenetrable fortress, Fenris looks back on his time in the service of Danarius. Since this story is told years after Fenris killed his former master in Dragon Age 2, much of the healing has taken place. Returning to Tevinter as the “Blue Wraith” to kill rebel magisters and slavers, his time in the company of Marius and Tessa once again gave his heart the freedom to trust once again. This support, whether he recognizes it or not, also gives him the freedom to look back on his past with a more stable footing. Instead of flying away in a rage or a bottle of wine, he looks back on his past with a clear head. This allows him to note that his former master used to have a secret tunnel in and out of the Castellum if he needed to escape in a hurry. “I suspect he’s built a new passage,” Fenris said, browsing his memories. “Only his most loyal and faithful servants would know.” It is this moment that propels the group on a new course of action: knowing who knows if this new entry point exists and how to access it.
The first issue arrives on March 31 with returning names like Nunzio DeFilippis, Fernando Heinz Furukawa, Michael Atiyeh and Christina Weir joining all their efforts to bring more stories from the amazing world of BioWare’s RPGs.
