Estrada vs Chocolatito 2: live updates, results & full card highlights for Juan Francisco Estrada-Roman Gonzalez

Must read

After nearly a decade, the highly anticipated rematch between WBC flyweight champion and The Ring Juan Francisco Estrada and WBA (Super) defending champion Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez will take place on Saturday night as they meet in of a unification showdown at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.

The first two met in 2012, Chocolatito defeating rising Estrada by unanimous decision in a lightweight flyweight bout. But Estrada (41-3, 28 KOs) has proven in this fight that he will be a force in the boxing world for years to come. Estrada would win 15 of his next 16 fights, his only loss to Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, who had just won back-to-back victories over Chocolatito. Estrada avenged the loss with a unanimous decision victory to win the WBC and The Ring Championships.

Gonzalez (50-2, 41 KOs) was once recognized as the world’s No.1 pound-for-pound fighter after Floyd Mayweather retired from the sport. His run was relatively short lived as he bit more than he could chew against Sor Rungvisai and abandoned a decision before being knocked out in the rematch. It was assumed that Chocolatito had been in one of too many wars, and it was possible that the end of his career was near. Instead, the Nicaraguan returned to his victories with four straight wins, including an impressive ninth-round stoppage by Kal Yafai to claim the WBA (Super) title.

With Estrada now seen as the king of the division, can Chocolatito prove he has his nemesis number in the rematch, or will Estrada send a message to the boxing world that he is the one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world today? ?

The co-main event has Jessica McCaskill (9-2, three KOs) defending her WBC, IBF, WBO and WBA women’s welterweight titles in a rematch with Cecilia Braekhus (36-1, nine KOs). McCaskill stunned Braekhus last August with a much contested decision victory. McCaskill quickly came out of the gates and Braekhus was forced to close the fight strong for a chance to come from behind. The judges gave the fight to McCaskill.

Braekhus wants to prove that she is the best woman and reclaim the titles that many believe she should never have lost. But the muscular McCaskill has no plans to put the belts back on after fighting so hard to be in this position.

Estrada vs. Gonzalez 2 Live Updates

9:34 p.m.: Austin “Ammo” Williams staked his claim as one of boxing’s brightest young talents with a dominant performance against late substitute Denis Douglin to win a unanimous decision. Williams improved to 8-0 against an opponent who played with David Benavidez, George Groves and Jermell Charlo. Williams looked to finish and seemed to come close a few times, but Douglin’s veteran experience kept him hanging on when the going got tough. But for Williams, it was a fantastic performance from a young fighter who was looking to get noticed.

8:50 p.m.: Raymond Ford was supposed to improve easily to 9-0 against the unannounced Aaron Perez. Instead, he walked away with a disappointing toss after Perez broke the fight against Ford from the opening bell and refused to allow Ford into any sort of comfort zone. The 78-74 scoreboard for Perez was absurd, but Ford has to take the blame for allowing a fighter he was clearly better than putting him in a position to lose. He ended up with a draw but, more importantly, a learning lesson to take each opponent seriously.
