Facebook has hired a vice president for civil rights as he seeks to improve his handling of these issues. Roy Austin Jr., a longtime civil rights lawyer and advocate, will form Facebook’s civil rights organization and become deputy general counsel. However, the company has yet to reveal the full scope or goals of the organization.

“I am delighted to join Facebook at this time when there is a national and global revival around civil rights,” Austin, who previously worked in the Obama administration and co-authored a report on big data and rights civilians, said in a press release. “Technology plays a role in almost every aspect of our lives, and it is important that it be used to overcome the historical discrimination and hatred that so many underrepresented groups have faced, rather than exacerbate it.
