Facebook Improves AI Photo Descriptions For The Visually Impaired

A new object detection system can also recognize the location of people in the frame as well as the number of people in the scene. And while you normally get a simple summary of a photo’s content, you’ll have a choice of a detailed description that describes the position, size, and nature of the objects.

This still offers a flawed description – Facebook has pointed out that it still uses “maybe” and is mistaken on the side of excluding concepts it cannot firmly recognize. It’s a big step forward for accessibility on social media, however, and could result in more visually impaired people understanding at least most of the photos in their feeds.
