Former Test drummer Peter Handscomb called the avalanche of criticism from Australian captain Tim Paine “an absolute joke”, following the defeat of the Border-Gavaskar series in India.
The great crickets Sunil Gavaskar, Michael vaughan, Kevin pietersen and Darren gough all delivered Paine a hellish roast, while former Australian heroes Mark Taylor, Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist and Brett Lee have remained much more measured but have identified their own flaws.
An astonished cricket world watched India, although without seven of its top players, clinched a three-wicket victory in thrilling scenes at the end of matchday five at Gabba.
The victory doomed Australia to their first defeat at the Brisbane venue since 1988, in which a West Indies team filled with gaming legends stormed a nine-wicket victory.
But Handscomb was left stunned by Paine’s extraordinary backlash.
“I can’t believe the fallout from this test is his harbor office. It’s just an absolute joke,” Handscomb said.
“The poor guy is beating brilliantly, making good points, taking the game and leading with that intention, which is really good to see.
“It’s ridiculous that it boils down to perceived captaincy ideas.
“The whole team is here and everyone is trying to do their best … it’s kind of a joke that the takeaway seems to be its captain.”
Paine is not the only member of the Australian organization to have drawn strong criticism.
Matthew Wade’s testing career could be over after the left-hander scored just 173 points with an eight-innings average of 21.62.
Speedster Mitchell starc (11 wickets, average of 40.72) is also fighting to keep his place in the Test tour of South Africa, while the position of non-spinner champion Nathan Lyon (nine wickets, average of 55.11) does no doubt but it was ineffective against India.
And replacement opening batsman Marcus Harris (43 points, 21.50 average) will likely be replaced by Will Pucovski if he’s fit, while he’s star. David warner will remain at the top of the order but recorded just 67 races for an average of 16.75 in the series.
