This week, Hollywood journalist had an exclusivity revealing that George RR Martin is working on a Game Of Thrones to play. Yes really. Martin ignores your pleas for him to end Winter winds and instead collaborate with playwright Duncan MacMillan and director Dominic Cooke to bring Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister to Broadway. And the West End. And somewhere in Australia. I’m sorry, but for paraphrase Krusty the Clown: This I do not need.
See, everyone is missing Game Of Thrones. The final season looked like a flawed whirlwind at the State Fair, but there have been six and a half really good seasons of television. There is already like six fallout in the works, does anyone also need a play? Yes, the Grand Tournament at Harrenhal – allegedly the production base – is a big deal, but I don’t know, all of you. We were already in excessive territory and it seems excessive. I’m not saying that I habit go see this when it opens – at this point i miss the theater so much i would attend a reading Justice League by Zack Snyder end credits – but man. Suddenly, a staging of Dexter: adolescence looks attractive.
Part of this can be attributed to Game Of Thrones Burnout. It was an epic spectacle, sometimes beautiful, and all of those attempts to reanimate his corpse can feel like a depreciation of the original experience. But there’s something else: why not host a stage production by literally any other TV writer or creator? There are so many! Personally, I would like to see what Pose showrunner Steven Canals would do it on Broadway. Or, do you know who probably has a great one-woman show begging to be produced? Michaela Coel. Maybe we could have a stage production of Russian doll? There is also the novel idea that someone could produce a piece from a total stranger who is just looking for a shot they won’t throw.
Again, that doesn’t mean that Game Of Thrones the game will be bad – there has always been something Shakespearean epic about the tangled family dramas of Martin’s world – it just seems pretty pointless. Given the current situation, it looks like Broadway could reopen in September, when it will be roughly 18 months since no production has launched. the Thrones the game isn’t slated to hit the scene until 2023, but even then there will likely still be plenty of pent-up demand after the dark year and a half of Broadway. It would be nice to see him bounce back with some wildly original productions. It’s true a Thrones production could guarantee tons of ticket sales at a time when the industry needs it, but it would be encouraging to see those dollars move on.
Just because something is a good idea doesn’t mean it’s necessary. As Godzilla vs. Kong NFT or Son of the Mask, some cultivation properties are simply not necessary. Others, like, say, of them Knives Out suites on netflix or whatever and everything Lil Nas X is doing right now is. It’s weird, in this day and age where there’s a mega-culture but not really a monoculture, to say it’s all too saturated, but when it comes to dark fantasy, the world is well stocked. Maybe it’s time we left the Thrones alone.
