Skycadia is a fast paced arcade fighting game in which you compete to collect the highest bounty in a colorful, pixelated world. It’s percolated for several years, going through many different iterations, and it’s finally ready to be enjoyed.
I am a full time game development instructor at a Midwestern community college, married with 4 children, and have spent the past 15 years in professional game development, co-founding two game studios freelance to large companies as a senior artist and game designer. Throughout my career, I have had the chance to share my passion for game development with hundreds of students and mentees.
The first idea I had for Skycadia was a mixture of the depth of Frame and blade with the arcade gameplay of Starfox. After creating a simple prototype flying around shooting enemies with colorful space visuals, I felt like I was on to something interesting. I started adding things to do between fights, navigating a map of the world with item stores and enemies, but after testing the game it was clear that the real fun was focusing on frenzied flight and shooting.

After making the game playable enough to show off to other people, I took a version to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and presented it to the great team at Microsoft. I was nervous, but they were encouraging and liked the concept, so they gave me the go ahead to develop Skycadia for Xbox One. It was a dream come true to develop my own game for a major console!
A former student, McGuire Leiting, very graciously agreed to help me complete the game by bringing in his artistic skills, so we started to think about how to take what I had already done and polish it into a package. full. We had a lot of ideas, but we focused on the arcade action and chasing the high scores. McGuire developed the distinct visual style he has today to enhance the mood of the game. He also kept me on track to finally finish the project!

As a lifelong game developer, I’ve been playing and creating games for many years, but this is my first major console release of a personal project. I can’t wait for you to put your hand Skycadia and let me know what you think. Please feel free to message me on Twitter with your comments, and I can’t wait to see your best scores above mine in the leaderboards.
