Google has always offered Chrome profiles to allow people who share devices to separate information from their browser. And while previous updates have focused on creating Log in easier and improved theme customizations, it is not tinkering with the wider profile experience. Google’s latest update aims to make these custom spaces even more distinct from each other.
The new system, billed as a complete overhaul of profiles, lets you create and change separate visual themes that are color coded and include their own backgrounds. As usual, you can grab these new looks from the Chrome Web Store. Once you’ve created the profiles, it should theoretically be easier to identify them when you return to the browser.
Compared to the existing profiles of different people that you added to Chrome on a laptop, this new setup is different in several ways. When you create a new profile, you’ll be prompted to customize the look of the browser and choose your favorite color scheme from a selection. Themes are a visual indication that you’re in the correct account, and Google told Engadget that “If you have multiple profiles configured, you’ll see a profile selector every time you restart Chrome.”
While the goal is to avoid confusion among multiple Chrome users, it’s easy to envision additional use cases for users who like to keep their work activity (including bookmarks and history) separate from their personal navigation. The update will roll out to desktops in the coming weeks and also includes a Reading List that lets you save articles you want to check out later.
