“The problems of Alphabet – and created by Alphabet – are not confined to one country and must be tackled globally,” said Christy Hoffman, UNI General Secretary. “The movement launched by techies from Google and beyond is inspiring. They are using their collective strength not only to transform their employment conditions, but also to solve social problems caused by the growing concentration of corporate power.

The announcement follows the creation of the Alphabet Workers Union, a group affiliated with the Communications Workers of America.

The new Alpha Global alliance will work together to increase pressure on Alphabet’s management. The group promised to “build a common strategy”, for example, create collective goals and support individual demands of unions. He will speak as one to lobby other entities – governments, investors, stakeholders and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) – who can ensure that Alphabet consistently upholds and enforces workers’ rights. The alliance will also encourage other unions to join, increasing its size and bargaining power.

“Alphabet has long lost its ‘Don’t be mean’ commitment, but we haven’t,” the statement released by UNI Global read. “Together, we will hold Alphabet responsible. Together we will change the alphabet. ”

According to The edge, the alliance wants to tackle a host of issues, including the treatment of content moderators and the use of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs).

Google was accused of dismissing employees for their role in the union organization. The company, however, said the workers were fired for “clear and repeated breaches” of data security policies. Before that, an employee claimed she was treated unfairly after organizing mass disengagement who was protesting the way Google had handled cases of sexual harassment. In recent months, the company has also come under fire for departure of AI researcher Dr. Timnit Gebru.
