Google Sector 120 The startup incubator has launched a few video apps that borrow from existing platforms like Houseparty and TikTok to target influencers and vloggers. Now he is suing workers with his latest creation: Threadit. The video service, which launched today as a website and Chrome extension, lets you record clips or your screen to share with your teammates. While you can create longer videos that are up to 70 minutes long, Threadit is designed for short form content that Google says gets more “engagement and viewing.”
Take a page from Google Workspace, Threadit lets you control whether recipients can reply to a clip by restricting them to viewing or allowing them to add their own video. There are also 17 video templates that basically create longer threads depending on the task. For example, the “Tutorial” option launches you with six steps, each for a different sized clip. Although the app is currently free, Google plans to launch a paid level with advanced features for large businesses in the future. Notably, Threadit is not available in the EU at launch, although it is accessible in the UK.
Google hasn’t had much luck with the short video in the past (remember Clips?). But the simple configuration of Threadit, which worked wonderfully for Zoom, could help his cause. The simple timing of the app – happening as it does as more people get acclimated to working from home – can work to its advantage as well. Otherwise, Google will probably remove it and start over.
