A new Polish game development studio, Covenant, is launching a dark fantasy strategy title called Gord in 2022. Leading the project is Covenant founder Stan Just, formerly of CD Projekt Red and 11-bit studios. Gord combines city building, survival, questing, and a number of other elements such as harnessing the procedural generation to explore its dark themes and terrible fantasy. All worlds find their inspiration somewhere, and Gord’s is rooted in Slavic folklore. Gord is a solo affair and is heading to PC. For a quick look at the Dark, watch the trailer below:
As you can see, your small crew of adventurers and townspeople are at extreme risk of being gruesomely slaughtered, whether it’s simply being eaten by wildlife or falling prey to demons, d ‘insects, giant spiders or worse. Guess those who get eaten by wolves are the lucky ones, eh? Surviving Gord while building your town is a key part of the game as you lead the Dawn Tribe to greatness or ruin. Probably bad luck for most of your attempts.
At the heart of your adventures is the city building or simulation component, but it is tempered by many other mechanics and features that require you to take on legendary monsters and head out into the wild for quests. Managing your city includes things that go beyond maintaining the diet and physical health of your crew, you will also need to manage their sanity when things go wrong. Random elements intertwine with this to create a varied gaming experience whenever you have a crack to take on the wilderness. Things are grim, but they are not impossible, as you can use powerful magic to increase your adventures when you go into battle. Before playing, you can customize elements of the game including the environment, enemy types, resources, weather, and more. Some sort of meta-progression system also seems to be part of the experience, as you collect torn pages from a mysterious lore book.
City survival games are always interesting, and I can’t wait to see where this dark fantasy tale takes us as we attempt to fend off the evil evils surrounding the colony. While we will have to wait a bit to play, we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for this one. What do you think of Gord? Let us know in the comments!
