Greg Inglis has refused to rule out a return to the Kangaroos later this year as he prepares for preseason duties with English Super League club Warrington.
Inglis shocked rugby league fans last year when he announced he was coming out of retirement play in the Super League in 2021 after retiring from the NRL in 2019.
The 34-year-old arrived in England five days ago with his mindset focused on how he can add value to his new squad.
Inglis has revealed that while he doesn’t expect to be 100% for the opening rounds of the competition, his goal is to shoot by the end of the season.
“I won’t come back to 100% until the fifth or sixth round,” Inglis told reporters.
“This is what I expect. I will gradually build. It has been a while since I was out of the game.”
“I chatted with the boys yesterday. I’m here to add value to the team. I’m here to do my job,”
“The thing is the challenge. I like to push my body to the limit. I want to come back in the game and give it my all.
“Towards the end of the year, I want to bring the team to the big stage.”
Shortly after announcing his return to the rugby league in early 2020, rumors of a return to football from the home state emerged when Maroons coach Kevin Walters has made it clear the door will be left open for Inglis to return to the Queensland squad for last year’s series.
With a Rugby World Cup slated for October, Inglis admitted he wasn’t thinking of a Kangaroos return, but admitted he would “re-evaluate” his options if an opportunity arose internationally.
“No, not at this point,” he said when asked if he would consider a return of the kangaroos.
“My only goal is to prepare my body well for the coming season for Warrington.
“If that happens at the end of the year and the opportunity presents itself, then I’m going to sit down and chat with the people around me and we’ll reassess from there.”
Inglis speaks out on mental health and race issues
Inglis also opened up about his struggles with mental health throughout his time in the sport, revealing how he initially struggled to seek support.
“No one knew except me what was going on,” he added.
“And I wasn’t willing or honest enough to talk about it. It wasn’t until a few months later that I went out and talked about it.
“It’s just something that excites me. It’s my own story and I’m happy to share it.
“I have ups and downs every now and then, but I have the tools to deal with them and the people around me to understand how I’m doing and how I’m doing things.”
