HBO Max has revealed the first preview of its upcoming animated series Aquaman: King of Atlantis, and the image, which you can see in the tweet below, was revealed as part of the Television Critics’ virtual conference. HBO Max Association on Wednesday, February 17. seems to show Arthur Curry – aka Aquaman – and longtime love interest Mera is gearing up to have a fight with someone, but it’s unclear who the duo are up against. Aquaman: The King of Atlantis’ distinctive art style is a far cry from the DCEU’s take on the aquatic character and suggests we’ll see a more comedic and wacky take on the Justice League member.

A three-part animated miniseries, Aquaman: King of Atlantis will follow Curry as he tackles the early days of his new role as ruler of Atlantis. Advised by Mera and his right-hand man Vulko, Aquaman will have to deal with unscrupulous surface dwellers, underwater threats, and his half-brother Orm, who wishes to claim the throne for his own.

Aquaman: King of Atlantis is produced by James Wan and his production company Atomic Monster. Victor Courtright and Mary Halpern-Graser, who produced and wrote Thundercats Roar respectively, will serve as showrunners and co-executive producers on the animated miniseries. The show was announced in January 2020 and, at the time, HBO Max’s head of original content, Sarah Aubrey, said Aquaman: King of Atlantis would be an “exciting addition” to the company’s lineup of shows.Aquaman has seen a resurgence in recent years thanks to Jason Momoa’s take on the superhero. In our review of Aquaman’s Standalone 2018 movie, we said “it really shouldn’t work that well, but it’s so inherently weird and brazenly bonkers that it’s hard to resist the siren call of this otherworldly madness.” A after and one derivative film – The trench – are in preparation.
