As many have said: It escalated steadily and predictably. Days after groups of Trump supporters stormed Capitol Hill in riots that left five people dead, including a police officer, social media companies continued to restrict the president’s access to their services. None of these moves were more shocking than Twitter decide to ban Donald Trump permanently and delete his @realdonaldtrump account.
A report from Associated press has been tracking the account since its inception in 2009 to promote a book. After gaining popularity, the account became a tool the President used to communicate messages such as the dismissal of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, as well as messages flagged as misleading or modified, until it all came to an end. 57,000 tweets and 88 million subscribers later.
Yet what I will remember the most what happened next. One of the most powerful men in the world, with almost unlimited access to any media network, has chosen to try to keep tweeting. In response, Twitter treated him like any other person caught evading a ban using another account. They deleted messages sent from @POTUS, suspended the Trump campaign’s Twitter account after attempting to use it, and even froze the campaign’s digital director account after offering it as a replacement..
What shall we do now? We do not know yet. President’s post claimed he was negotiating with other services – Talking might be less appealing with its application banned on the Android App Store and facing a ban on iOS – and threatened to launch his own platform. Either way, that will continue to loom in the country as the transition draws closer, and in the tech world trying to focus on things like CES next week.
