How to unlock and craft a pickaxe

To craft a pickaxe in Valheim, you will first need to acquire a series of materials that can only be obtained by defeating the game’s very first boss, Eikthyr.

Defeating Eikthyr should be a fairly easy task, but as you might expect facing your first boss is quite nerve-racking and will take a few hours of preparation before you jump right in. Before you tackle Eikthyr, you need to make sure you’ve crafted some leather armor, shield, and flint ax / knife. All of these items require the following materials: deer skins, scraps of leather, flint, stone and antlers.

Killing deer is also crucial, as you will need two deer heads to summon the mighty deer boss, Eikthyr.

After defeating Eikthyr, you will receive several pairs of hardwoods. These woods can be used to unlock the Antler Pickaxe, which can now be crafted on a level 2 or higher workbench. To craft the Antler Pickaxe, you will need x10 woods and x1 hardwoods.

Once you’ve crafted the Antler Pickaxe, you’ll now be able to mine for Iron, Tin, and Copper ores. Which will eventually help you unlock even more upgrades on the weapon and armor front.
