Italy blocks TikTok for some users after girl dies

The blockage lasts until February 15, and TikTok will have to respond to DPA requests until then.

A spokesperson for TikTok did not say how the company would react to Italy’s move. Instead, the representative stressed that safety is TikTok’s “top priority” and that the social media giant does not allow any content that “encourages, promotes or glorifies” unsafe behavior.

The tragedy illustrates the inadequacies and difficulties of monitoring minors on social networks. TikTok’s rule on underage users exists largely due to the US COPPA children’s data protection law, but it’s not the only country with similar rules – and some may insist on stricter enforcement than age barriers. The company may need to implement significantly tougher measures to both prevent similar deaths and avoid repression.
