Serena Williams achieved what she considers a “vintage” performance in her first round clash against Laura Siegemund, beating the German 6-1 6-1 in one hour.
This was Williams at her best and a relaxed 2020 schedule seems to have done her good for the world as she is a far cry from the lame version of Serena we saw less than 12 months ago.
At 39, Williams’ longevity at the peak of women’s tennis is one of the most astonishing achievements of all sports.
However, she’s far from the only eternal wonder and pays homage to NFL star Tom Brady, who just earned his seventh Super Bowl victory at 43.
“Tom Brady is in my age group so it’s exciting,” she said after the win.
“He’s incredible. To be competitive at such a high level, for us, one of the biggest championships in the world, at 43, it’s incredible.
“It’s super inspiring for me at my young age of 30.”
Williams’ longevity in his own cape is often compared to the long prime numbers of Brady and NBA star LeBron James.
James and Brady just won titles, will Serena capture that elusive 24th Grand Slam? If she continues to play in this vein, it’s hard to see who is stopping her.
