Lampard sacked by Chelsea and set to be replaced by Tuchel following poor Premier League form

Frank Lampard has been sacked from his job as Chelsea manager and will be replaced by former Paris Saint-Germain coach Thomas Tuchel.

Lampard had been in charge for just over 18 months, but quit after five losses in the last eight games.

He will be replaced by Tuchel, with Goal Understanding that a verbal agreement had been in place between Chelsea and their new manager for a few days before the news of Lampard’s departure became public.

Chelsea confirmed Lampard’s exit on Monday morning With owner Roman Abramovich making an unprecedented statement, Tuchel is expected to be named within the next 24 hours.

Lampard led Chelsea to a 3-1 FA Cup victory over Luton Town on Sunday, but the club’s Premier League form has raised concerns.

The 42-year-old finished in the top four last season, which was deemed impressive after taking over when the club were under a transfer ban.

However, this season Chelsea have spent £ 220million ($ 275million) on new signings to try and close the gap on Liverpool and Manchester City.

It didn’t work, with Timo Werner and Kai Havertz suffering long spells of bad form under their new manager as Chelsea’s team performances got worse and worse.

Club president Bruce Buck followed up with technical and performance adviser Petr Cech as Leicester City won 2-0 over Lampard’s side in their final league game.

Brendan Rodgers’ men’s loss was just the latest in a string of losses to top Premier League sides, which recently included setbacks to Manchester City and Arsenal.

Chelsea have only beaten West Ham of the top 11 clubs this season, while also collecting the second lowest number of points at this stage of the season since Roman Abramovich bought the club in 2003.

Lampard has got 1.67 points per game in the league, which is the lowest of any coach named since Abramovich bought Chelsea.

The former England midfielder was willing to continue, but the decision was taken out of his hands by superiors.

Former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund boss Tuchel is expected to be the man to enter Stamford Bridge, following his dismissal by Ligue 1 champions PSG just before Christmas.

Tuchel, who leaned in for the role, might be the right person to make the most of Werner and Havertz, as well as Christian Pulisic who was brought to the academy in Dortmund.

Meanwhile, Lampard’s legendary status remains intact and many Chelsea fans would have been happy to see him continue. A display had been planned for the Shed End portion of the stadium, urging Chelsea to stick with their all-time top scorer, with 211 goals, and their manager.

Lampard previously ran Derby County after retiring from a glorious playing career that saw him win the Champions League and three Premier League titles.
