Rap legend Earl “DMX” Simmons has passed away at the age of 50.
DMX was known for his raw, authentic and aggressive style and gruff voice, which made his music stand out throughout his career.
Combining raw emotion and socially conscious lyrics, DMX was a three-time Grammy-nominated artist who also made forays into the big screen, appearing in films such as “Romeo Must Die” and “Cradle 2 The Grave”.
Best known for hits such as “Ruff Ryders ‘Anthem”, “Party Up (Up In Here)”, “Who We Be” and “X Gon’ Give It To Ya”, DMX’s career spanned over 20 years. and eight studio albums, five of which reached No. 1 on the US charts consecutively. His albums have been certified platinum 14 times by the RIAA.
DMX was admitted to hospital on April 2 after suffering a heart attack. He remained in hospital on life support until April 9, with his family confirming his death that morning.
The music from DMX resonated with many, including active and past members of the sports world, who paid tribute to the artist on Friday.
I was 12 when I bought my first DMX album. “It’s dark and hell is hot.” I remember hiding it from my parents (especially daddy) and only listening to it on my Panasonic shock wave. RIP to a legend.
