Leon Cameron could be in his final season as coach of the GWS Giants if he is unable to take his side in the final, according to veteran AFL journalist Caroline Wilson.

After miss the top eight last yearCameron’s side face an uphill battle to reach the final this season, having started the 2021 season in the dreaded 0-2 hole.

The Giants’ power brokers have backed Cameron publicly, but Wilson has suggested that wins and losses will ultimately dictate whether he remains a coach beyond 2021.

“We all think deep down that if it doesn’t improve it will be Leon’s last year as a senior coach with GWS,” she told Nine’s. Footy Ranked.

“If they finish in the bottom six or eight, I don’t think they’ll be there next year.”

Wilson’s comments come after the Cameron Giants were put to the sword by a young Fremantle side on Sunday, with the 31-point margin flattering the Giants at the end.

Cameron conceded his senior men could take on the ax as a result of their performance, and Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes was just as scathing.

“It was a coach killer in every sense of the word, that performance,” he said.

“Fremantle with their young team and the injuries they have, for the Giants to serve what (we’ve seen) is a shocking look for Leon.

“He was already under pressure and performances like that didn’t help him. They are the same players: Coniglio, Ward, Hopper, Kelly (and) De Boer.”

“It was a real concern for Leon, his players just aren’t working for him,” added Essendon big Matthew Lloyd.

“During the grand finale (2019) they were absolutely brutal, and Leon should get credit for it, but they don’t play that way anymore.”
