Moses Mbye has revealed that he has stepped down as captain of the Wests Tigers.
Mbye was named club captain in 2019 in what was one of coach Michael Maguire’s first moves at the time. He was the club’s only captain in 2019, before becoming co-captain alongside big club Benji Marshall last year.
With the club not making the final in each of the past two years with Mbye leading the squad, the 27-year-old admitted the time had come to step down.
The former Bulldog says he gives up the harbor master’s office feeling “proud” of what he has accomplished while acknowledging that it is now better to spend more time watching his own performance.
“It’s something I’m proud of,” he said. Nine news.
“I gave him a good chance.
“We haven’t had too much success, so there’s no point – if you do the same thing over and over again, and it doesn’t work, that’s pretty dumb. It’s time to try something different.
“I know it’s a team sport, but first you have to do your job well in order for everyone to do their job well.
“I figured out the captain stuff on my own – I felt obligated to help everyone before me.”

When asked who should take on the captain role, Mbye replied that he hoped off-season rookie James Tamou land the role.
Tamou, 32, has played 267 NRL games to date, including 12 Origin level appearances for the Blues and 12 for the Kangaroos at Test level. He also won a premier with the Cowboys in 2015 and was part of Penrith’s grand final team, who lost to the Storm last year.
“James Tamou has come in,” Mbye said.
“He has a good track record in terms of experience and success. He won a prime ministerial post, played Origin and played for his country.
“I would like to see James at the bar.
