Former Australian cricket captain Mark Taylor announced the offers during Indian Premier League auction last week were “extraordinary”, while emphasizing Glenn maxwell pocketing a multi-million dollar deal when he hadn’t shot in India lately.
Maxwell later this year will face a mega IPL contract after being sold to Virat Kohli’s Royal Challengers Bangalore for $ 2.52 million.
The 32-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most damaging players in short-form cricket. Maxwell has consistently impressed at home, especially in the Big Bash League, averaging 32.90 points and hitting 149.63 in 86 games.
However, Taylor pointed out that Maxwell can be a “draw or few” player who has struggled at the IPL level.
Maxwell during the 2020 IPL season averages just 15.42 with the bat across 13 games.
“Some of the offers were amazing,” Taylor told 2GB Wide World of Sports radio.
“Even for Maxi, we all know he’s sometimes dubbed the ‘big show’.
“He tends to be a draw or a few, he hasn’t been very good at IPL lately. I can’t think of the last time he scored 50 in an IPL game, he really had struggling there.
“Once again, people know what he can do, so they tend to get excited about this auction. He did well.”
Another big surprise at last week’s IPL auctions was the fortune of former Australian captain Steve Smith, who suffered a loss of $ 2 million.
Smith, who was shortlisted last year with a $ 2.5million contract with the Rajasthan Royals, was the first player to be sold at IPL auction on Thursday after Delhi Capitals Ricky Ponting reclaimed the champion right-handed for just $ 389,000.
Last year, the 31-year-old Smith scored 311 points with an average of 25.91 in 14 games, which was well below the 2019 average of 39.87.
“I can’t believe this [he went so low], I really can’t, ”Taylor added.
“This is the best buy in the IPL auction in the past 10 years.”
But with Smith cutting such a cut, Taylor said he wouldn’t be surprised if the star drummer chose to stay in Australia due to complications from COVID-19.
“I think he’s going to weigh things (staying in Australia),” Taylor said.
“It’s not just the two months there; there will probably be about forty, probably on each side.
“We will talk about getting vaccinated before leaving or there. All of those kinds of things.
“Will it be worth it? $ 300,000 is a lot of money, but for a guy like Steve Smith – two months of play and two weeks on either side of quarantine. He could, if he did. doesn’t have to, say, “No thanks, I’m staying here.”
