Melbourne Demons ‘Steven May injured in eye as Geelong Cats’ Tom Hawkins hits with elbow

The Melbourne star’s defender Steven May is set to miss several weeks after an elbow from Tom Hawkins left him with a horrific eye injury and potential concussion.

The incident occurred when May was arguing with Hawkins for near-border football in the Geelong 50 forward during the second term.

Hawkins won the ball, attempted to push May back, and as the former Sun tried to drag him to the ground while pulling on his Guernsey’s back, a Hawkins elbow caught him in the face in the MCG match, won by demons 12.13 (85) to 9.6 (60).

May was no longer in the game and was in a worrying condition when taken from the field by medical staff, swaying as blood flowed from a swollen eye area.

The demons are still investigating whether May suffered a concussion in the incident, which would exclude her from the fifth round under the AFL’s new 12-day law, but the club don’t believe he will still be fit to face Hawthorn.

Medical replacement Tom Sparrow replaced May on the pitch as Adam Tomlinson took it upon himself to squeeze Hawkins, and while the former giant limited defending medalist Coleman to two goals in the past two quarters, the loss of May in Melbourne is colossal.

“He went to the hospital,” Demons coach Simon Goodwin said in his post-game press conference.

“It’s more about stuff around his eye and getting that checked out.

“We don’t know what that looks like yet. We will wait to see. He’s clearly going to be missing a few weeks and that’s disappointing.

“We still have all the details (on the concussion) so we’re not 100% sure. But it’s going to take a couple of weeks anyway. Concussion, eye… be a couple of weeks.”

Former Collingwood and Richmond sniper Brian Taylor suggested Hawkins hadn’t come into conflict.

“I would say it’s completely accidental,” Taylor said on the cover of Channel Seven.

“No problem there.”

The Demons’ mission now is to continue their hot start to the season in May’s absence, after Goodwin’s men claimed four straight wins to finish the fourth round in second.

They have taken victories over Fremantle, St Kilda, GWS and Geelong and now sit between the Western Bulldogs, first, and Sydney Swans, third.
