Melbourne has been revealed as Cricket Australia’s favorite venue if Sydney is unable to host third test against India.
Northern Beaches’ COVID outbreak has cast doubt on SCG’s ability to host the game, with interstate borders closed making travel difficult.
Players, as well as CA staff and media are expected to travel to Brisbane immediately after the Sydney test for the Series Finals at Gabba.
But with current border restrictions, such a move would be impossible.
In a statement, CA noted that it has strong biosecurity protocols in place and would work with the Queensland government to secure exemptions if border restrictions are not lifted before the fourth test, which is to begin. January 15th.
While reaffirming their commitment to play the third Test in Sydney if possible, CA confirmed that their preferred contingency is to play the game at the MCG.
“We have always argued that planning a full summer of cricket during a global pandemic would require agility, problem solving and teamwork like never before,” said Nick Hockley, CA boss.
“We continue to make the safety and well-being of everyone involved a top priority.
“The record number of tests and the decline in new community transmissions in New South Wales have given rise to optimism, but if the situation in Sydney deteriorates, we have strong contingency plans in place.
“We are working constructively with the Queensland government and have been encouraged by the positive nature of the discussions with them.
Hockley confirmed that a final decision on the location of the third test would be made during the Boxing Day Test.
