According to Cuomo’s proposal, mobile sports operators should obtain a state license and be tied to an authorized gaming facility, according to the Daily News. He would ask the New York State Gaming Commission to seek proposals to offer mobile sports betting and ensure that gaming app operators include protections against addiction and abuse.
Residents of neighboring New Jersey were able to place sports bets through their phones and computers since 2018 and the state is ready to overtake Nevada as the largest betting market in the country. In November, residents (and players from New York and beyond) placed over $ 872 million in online bets, which generated more than $ 30 million in taxes. This has brought the state’s weight of online sports betting to $ 268.8 million for 2020 so far, with final numbers due to be revealed next week.
