The NRL expects to welcome returning capacity crowds to NSW and Queensland by mid-March, marking the first time that the land will be able to sell since last year’s first round .

It was the call of General Manager Andrew Abdo who welcomed the upcoming footy at the launch of today’s NRL 2021 season – a toned down daytime event held at the White Bay Cruise Terminal in Sydney.

It was also a chance for the NRL to launch its theme for the season – “ challenge the impossible ” – with all 16 NRL club captains present in the flesh in a daring position for the game.

While this was a much smaller event than many believed, officials were supported by the imminent return of crowds, faster play and no biosecurity bubbles.

“At this point everyone is doing such a good job,” Abdo said.

“We’re going to have fans back in the stadiums, all of our favorite comeback events – Anzac Round, Magic Round and Easter – so there’s a lot to look forward to.”

Abdo also reflected on the hard lessons of the global pandemic and ensured the game was ready to stay ahead of the game.

“We are going to be vigilant and we foresee the worst. We will be ready for any scenario,” Abdo told AAP.

“We’re not taking this for granted, we’ll be monitoring the situation. We saw at the Australian Open how quickly things can change, so if there is an outbreak we will be ready to go into effect with it. our protocols. “
