Bulldogs coach Trent Barrett unwittingly blurted out that the club missed the signing of young Broncos pistol Brendan Piakura, unbeknownst to Kevin Walters.

The two clubs were locked in a showdown over the promising youngster, which was all the more crucial with the departure of the talented Reece Walsh of Red Hill.

But speaking in the wake of the Bulldogs’ 24-0 loss to the Broncos, Barrett blurted out that the club had failed to attract Piakura.

“Yeah, I think he’s going to stay in Brisbane,” Barrett said at his press conference.

“He did (looks like we got him) and he’s a really good young Brendan player and a good young boy and I wish him all the best.

“We’re disappointed, but he will stay here (at Red Hill).

“He’s athletic and tall and can do anything. He comes from a great Brendan family and they are a good player themselves.”

When Walters arrived for his press conference, everything was new to him.

“I’m sort of unaware of this mate,” Walters replied confused when posing with the development.

“Well, I won’t comment on that Pete. I don’t know until we hear this from Brendan, I won’t comment.

“I said last week that we are confident and that we would like to keep all of our players.

“We were disappointed to lose Reece. We still have four or five players we need to hang on to. We will get there.”
