Pat Cummins has made the surprising admission that he “isn’t too sure” if he really wants to captain Australia.

Cummins is the Australian vice-captain of the Test behind Tim Paine and was unveiled on Wednesday as skipper for a day of New South Wales.

It will be a trial of real significance for the brains of Cummins and Cricket Australia as they consider options to be Paine’s successor.

The star fast bowler hasn’t regularly coached a team in the Under-16s and has given an honest assessment of his state of mind and preparation. in an interview with Wide World of Sports Radio.

“Mate, to be honest I’m not too sure,” Cummins replied to Mark Levy’s question if he would ultimately be a willing successor to the 36-year-old Paine.

“I really haven’t had any experience as a captain, so the simple question of whether I’m good at it, or like it, or if it affects my bowling … will be resolved during the next few weeks. “

Cummins spoke to a group of reporters earlier today and was careful not to rock the boat by jokingly supporting Paine to play until he was “45”.

Unsurprisingly, he pushed back Mark Taylor’s opinion that fast bowlers were not well suited to the demands of the harbor master’s office.

“I don’t think so just because you’re a bowler or wicket keeper automatically kicks you out of the harbor office,” Cummins said.

“There is no doubt that there are still some challenges in the bowling profession, but it also brings opportunities.

“You hope our skill is trying to get wickets as a bowler and that’s often what you try to do as a captain on the field.

“Managing the workload is something I’m going to have to see how it goes in these next few games … but I’m not too sure about the longer form.”

Cummins admitted there were practical challenges to getting the show running quickly.

“I think the most obvious as a fast bowler is if it’s a really hot day and you’re trying to play flat all day,” he said.

Langer responds to claims of unrest

“It’s just about making sure the game doesn’t play out in those times when you’re trying to catch your breath.”

Cummins also had some interesting thoughts on some of Australia’s greatest cricket brains, past and present.

“Steve Waugh was out there in the ashes and I loved the simplicity with which he kept things,” Cummins said.

“We all love cricket and talk about cricket and very quickly you try to get into the smallest details while I love how he just takes a step back and keeps it simple.

“Ricky Ponting – just his love of the game and the way he played 160 tests and he always seemed to be ready for every moment and loves it.

“Painey – I like the way he deals with people.

“Steve [Smith] always think about the game.

“Same [Michael] Clarkey I felt a million dollars when he gave me the ball in my first game.

“You pick little pieces from each captain, but the main thing for me, you want to have a good relationship, have a little fun and always try to think about things.”
