Since Portal 3 doesn’t appear to be in the near future for Valve, the desire for any sort of continuation of the sci-fi franchise with homicidal AI free and unbridled reign. Because of this, this fan-driven Portal 2 project is the perfect excuse to dive back into the world of cakes that don’t really exist and the philosophies about demanding life take its lemons back.
I’ve covered this mod before, and for good reason. The project is called Desolation and it’s a huge campaign that expands the Portal universe. The mod team is back from a great holiday break, and to celebrate, they’ve shared a new gameplay video about how Desolation works in Portal 2 and what other fans can expect:
One of the coolest aspects of the gameplay reveals a new environmental style the team implemented called “Industrial”. According to the modding team, “This style features open test chambers built into vast mined caverns. Built in the 1990s, Industrial serves to fill the gap between Old Aperture and the modern enrichment center, the chambers being constructed with modern materials assembled by human construction workers rather than machines. This means that the reconfigurable panel arms associated with the enrichment center are not present: the structures are rigid and formidable, giving a more The visuals are further enhanced by our suite of new features to update the source engine, such as PBR (physical rendering) and a new tonemapper. “
The video above also showcases one of the new test chambers in Chapter 3: Chain. This streak looks tricky, as it can be with faith plaque confidence, but the team assure interested fans that it is “a lot less complicated than it looks”.
Also included in a new HUD overlay that allows players to track their progress and other key information before entering each room.
The aspect that excites me the most, personally, is the new concept art of the Portal pistol (which has continued to evolve since May 2018):
