Real Madrid have confirmed that club president Florentino Perez has called for nominations for the club’s upcoming leadership elections – although the current Supreme is the only candidate at the moment.
Los Blancos have announced that the process leading up to the elections for the next four-year cycle – running from mid-2021 to mid-2025 – has now officially started, as the club seek to ensure they do not complete the current campaign empty. -handed.
Perez, whose two separate terms as 15th and 18th Madrid president combine to make him the second-oldest figure in the role, after Santiago Bernabeu, is currently expected to seal his reelection unless another candidate emerges.
What exactly happened?
“Following today’s board meeting and in accordance with article 38, section b of the social statutes of Real Madrid, the president asked the electoral board to call for the elections of the president and from the administration board” the club confirmed in an official statement.
Put simply, this means Perez has ordered the campaigns to officially start both for his own post and for those on the board of the current La Liga champions.
There is no date set for these elections, but it is likely that they will take place around the middle of the year, between the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 campaigns.
Perez’s reign to date
The civil engineer first took charge of Madrid in 2000, succeeding Lorenzo Sanz in the post and leading the club for six years.
During his first stint, Los Blancos developed their brand internationally, but Perez stepped down in 2006, stepping down after criticizing that he was not focusing enough on the team’s success on the pitch.
He was replaced by Ramon Calderon, only to resign in 2009 amid allegations of vote rigging, and Perez returned, unopposed, to replace Vicente Boluda’s interim option in mid-2009.
Since then he has led Madrid to almost unmatched success across the continent and has called on players such as Cristiano Ronaldo.
It had appeared he would face challenges from Boluda and Enrique Riquelme as he pursues a fourth consecutive term this year, but the two appear to have dampened their interest in recent weeks.
