Big winners Rory McIlroy, Jason Day and Patrick Reed paid tribute to injured icon Tiger Woods by wearing his red shirt and black pants together for the final round of the WGC Workday Championship.
Woods suffered serious leg injuries in a car crash in Los Angeles County last week, with authorities saying he was lucky to be alive. He has since undergone multiple surgeries and doubts remain about his golfing career, which has garnered 15 majors and 82 PGA Tour titles.
He was touched by the gesture of his professional colleagues.
Arguably the greatest golfer of all time, Woods is a hero to many players and a wave of support followed his crash.
Tommy Fleetwood was another grand champion to wear red and black on Sunday (AEDT Monday) at the WGC event in Florida. Tony Finau, Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Champ and Sebastian Munoz also donned the colors of Tiger.
Still, Max Homa, who won the Genesis Invitational hosted by Woods the weekend before Tiger’s crash, hit out on Twitter after announcing he wouldn’t be able to wear red and black. Homa was called “classless”, among other things, in response to his announcement, but laughed in fury.
Homa received his Genesis Trophy from Woods and then said (by Golf.com): “I was as happy as I could be.”
Of Woods’ crash, he said: “I’m very grateful that it looks like Tiger will be okay. Forget about golf – I think it’s the furthest thing from what should be in the game. anybody’s mind. I just want him to be able to live normally. life with his family. I know, it’s weird to feel like this about someone you don’t really know, but it’s there effect that someone like Tiger Woods – or Kobe Bryant – can have. “
Regardless – the stacking has started. Homa, who only qualified for the Workday Championship by winning the Genesis, wore a striped white shirt.
Further on, golf icon Annika Sorenstam wore red on Sunday for her surprise return to the LPGA Tour, while Tiger’s former sparring partner Phil Mickelson wore red at the PGA Tour Champions Cologuard Classic. US Masters winner Fred Couples played a special Tiger ball.
