President Donald Trump has said his lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who led the effort to overturn the November 3 general election results, tested positive for the coronavirus.
The 76-year-old former New York mayor was admitted to Georgetown University Medical Center on Sunday, The New York Times reported, citing an unidentified source. Earlier in the morning, Giuliani appeared in an interview on Fox News and spoke at length about the president’s challenges with election results.
Trump, who announced Giuliani’s diagnosis on Twitter, wished him good luck in a tweet on Sunday, saying “we will continue !!!” Andrew, the son of Giuliani, a White House aide who had Covid in November, tweetedthat his father “rests, receives great care and feels good”.
My father@RudyGiulianiis resting, receiving great care and feeling well. Thanks to all the friends who reached out, concerned about his well-being.https://t.co/0FVceiNnHc– Andrew H. Giuliani (@AndrewHGiuliani)December 6, 2020
Giuliani’s diagnosis is the latest setback in the president’s effort to cling to power by claiming without evidence that the election was torn apart by fraud. Courts across the country have rejected claims by Trump and his allies, who seek to overturn Democrat Joe Biden’s victory.
Since the election, the former New York mayor has appeared repeatedly at press conferences, before lawmakers and in other settings without masks or practicing social distancing to prevent the spread of the virus.
Giuliani starred in the president’s post-election effort after David Bossie, an outside Trump adviser who was leading his post-election fight, was sidelined with the virus days after the election. Trump tapped Bossie after his Chief of Staff Mark Meadows was diagnosed with the virus.
Trump was hospitalized with Covid-19 in October, interrupting his re-election campaign. The president entered Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on October 2 after announcing that he and first lady Melania Trump had been diagnosed. He was released three days later.
Giuliani and his representatives did not immediately respond to calls for comment.
.@RudyGiuliani, by far the greatest mayor in New York history, and who has worked tirelessly to denounce the most corrupt (by far!) election in U.S. history, has tested positive for the Chinese virus . Heal Rudy soon, we will continue !!! – Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump)December 6, 2020
Giuliani has been a key force in driving Trump’s claims of widespread and implausible electoral fraud to benefit President-elect Biden, whose victory has been certified by states with more than the required 270 Electoral College votes. Unperturbed, Trump tweeted again on Sunday his baseless claim that he won the presidential vote.
The Trump campaign legal team released a statement Sunday night saying Giuliani tested negative twice just before his trip to Arizona, Michigan and Georgia, and only tested positive more than 48 hours after. his return. Giuliani was in Atlanta on Thursday on behalf of the president.
“No lawmaker in any state or member of the press is on the contact tracing list,” the statement said. “Other team members who are defined as having had close contact will follow their doctors’ directions and CDC guidelines on self-isolation and testing.
Giuliani, who served as mayor of New York from 1994 to 2001, became the butt of late-night comedians jokes about style and substance.
Shortly after networks called Biden the race, Giuliani appeared before a Philadelphia landscaping company, tucked between a crematorium and an adult movie store, to declare that the president would not concede.
He was ridiculed for a later appearance at a press conference on November 19 to highlight his fraud allegations as dark liquid – possibly hair dye – trickled down his face. Giuliani and his colleagues alleged that Republican observers were not allowed to observe the count in Philadelphia and Detroit, and that the American voting machines made by Dominion Voting Systems Inc. used software made in Venezuela under the direction of Hugo. Chavez. Chavez, who was the president of that country, died in 2013.
