Roh also confirmed Samsung’s plans to expand its portfolio of foldable devices, which only makes sense given the company’s momentum in 2020. In February – at one of the latest events of in-person launch of the year – Samsung announced the Galaxy z flip, a foldable flapper that proved to be more powerful and more affordable than Motorola’s Razr. Then, in September, Samsung released the Galaxy z fold 2, which remedied many of the issues plaguing the first-gen Galaxy Fold and made its debut with great success. From 2021, the company would plan up to four new foldables – two Z Folds and two Z Flips, of course – signaling an even more pronounced push to make these devices the future of the smartphone.
Samsung has established itself as the pioneer in the foldable race, but one thing has kept adoption from picking up further so far: price. Currently, even the cheapest foldable usually costs as much as a high-end flagship phone, but that could change soon. Roh specifically noted that the company aims to make foldables “more accessible” in 2021, suggesting that Samsung will produce at least one cheaper model to boost growth in the coming months.
While this is the first time Samsung has publicly acknowledged these plans, they are – sadly – quite meager on the details. We won’t have to wait too long for correct answers, though: Samsung will be hosting a virtual keynote as part of CES 2021, and all signs point to a good (albeit online) Unboxed on the last day of the. program.
