Australia’s Ash Barty is in the Yarra Valley Classic final after Serena Williams withdrew from the duo’s semi-final due to injury.
Barty and Williams were scheduled to face each other in a highly anticipated game on Saturday, but Williams chose to rest instead due to what has been called a “right shoulder injury”.
Advancing to the final is great news for Barty, but there’s no doubt that she would have really appreciated Serena’s tune up ahead of the Australian Open, especially after her huge layoff before this week.
Williams had previously expressed his enthusiasm in the upcoming clash against Barty after beating Danielle Collins in the quarterfinals.
“It’s a really good opportunity to see where I’m going against the current number 1, it’s really important to me,” said Williams.
“Obviously I’m also thinking for her, to see where she goes against my game.
“It’s been 12 months. Tennis has been played but not really so … I hope it’s like a new year where things will be different.”
