BBC sports presenter Sonja McLaughlan was left in tears in the aftermath of the in-depth interviews with England rugby Captain Owen Farrell and Coach Eddie Jones.
McLaughlan interviewed Farrell immediately after England lost a 40-24 Test to Wales in Cardiff on Sunday (AEDT).
It wasn’t a sweet interview, as it is sometimes when emotions run high right after the full-time whistle blows. McLaughlan pressed Farrell over the controversial refereeing and his team’s lack of composure.
The English skipper seemed uncomfortable with the assertive questions and mostly shut down McLaughlan with non-binding answers. She also toasted Jones over the controversial elements of the Six Nations game right after a full time.
McLaughlan later revealed that she was inundated with abuse on social media during interviews, causing her to burst into tears.
Former England international Ugo Monye offered McLaughlan a message of support.
Much like the official Six Nations Rugby Twitter account, posting the message: “Sonja, we join with the rest of the rugby community in saying this is not correct. Respect is a value of rugby that we hold high. believes. Abuse of public figures or members of the media on social networks or elsewhere is not acceptable. “
McLaughlan’s interview with Farrell began as follows.
McLaughlan: “Owen, were England robbed by a poor referee tonight?”
Farrell: “Umm … that’s not for us to talk about. We picked up our way in this second half and weren’t quite done. There are a lot of things we can do better. “
