JuJu Smith-Schuster continued to turn on his heels last week when he shrugged off his first 2021 NFL playoff opponent as he told reporters, “The Browns are the Browns … They are a good team, but I’m just happy we “replay them this Sunday. “
With this remark, Smith-Schuster managed to reduce the game between the Steelers (12-4) and the Browns (11-5) to its essence. Are the Browns still the same old team that hasn’t reached a conference championship game since 1989? Or is this really a new era of skill in Cleveland? Pittsburgh, who probably should have held on to their own devices after four losses in their last five games, are hoping the AFC North’s balance of power will remain unchanged.
Cleveland quarterback Baker Mayfield’s ability to avoid turnovers will likely be a key factor on Sunday night. In his second season in the NFL in 2019, he threw 21 interceptions and lost two fumbles. This year, he’s thrown just eight picks and lost four fumbles. Pittsburgh’s opportunistic defense was second in the league for take out.
Mayfield, of course, never took the field in the playoffs. Ben Roethlisberger has done it 21 times and won two Super Bowl rings.
The importance of recent history will therefore be put to the test at Heinz Field.
