Stefanos Tsitsipas has received a coaching warning after the Greek youngster appeared to receive instructions from his box at the end of his quarter-final clash with Rafael Nadal.
After firing back after two sets, Tsitsipas managed to force a fourth set to leave the Spaniard to keep the game alive.
Locked in the fourth, Tsitsipas was stopped by chair umpire Damien Dumusois for what he suspected was a time violation, before issuing a coach warning.
The timing had some significance considering Patrick Mouratoglou, the coach involved in Serena’s infamous US Open merger, is also a member of the Tsitsipas team.
“The world’s most famous coaching violation was Serena Williams with Patrick Mouratoglou against Naomi Osaka in the US Open final a few years ago… just a reminder,” said tennis great Jim Courier. .
Todd Woodbridge added: “We (Tsitsipas) learned that they had been warned a short time ago.
“We told them and the referee called.”
Courier mentioned that there was no clear way of knowing whether Mouratoglou or Tsitsipas’ father, Apostolos, was the one spotted as the coach.
“There’s no way of knowing if it was Patrick or his dad (Apostolos), they’re both coaches,” Courier added.
“It’s also worth pointing out that a player is penalized for something he doesn’t necessarily do in this environment.
“That’s how it works. If a coach says something he shouldn’t say, it’s the player who gets the penalty.”
