Streaming dominates Oscar nominations in a Year at Home

Must read

It was safe to assume that streaming would dictate Oscar nominations in a pandemic-stricken year when theaters were generally closed, but it’s now clear which of these online movies came out on top. The Academy has ad its main nominees for the Oscars 2021, and Netflix was once again the favorite – although there have been a few newcomers this time around.

Netflix racked up 31 nominations this year. David Fincher Mank led the group with 10 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Gary Oldman) and Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried). The end Chadwick boseman got his due with a Best Actor nomination for Ma Rainey’s black background, with co-star Viola Davis receiving a nod for Best Actress. Hillbilly Elegy gave Glenn Close a chance to win the award for Best Supporting Actress. The Chicago 7 trial also had a banner year with nominations for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Sacha Baron Cohen) and Best Original Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin), among others.

Amazon Prime Video Borat: next movie and Hulu’s The United States vs. Billie Holiday also made the shortlists.

It’s not that other services came out empty-handed – at least this was the year for new services to make their presence felt. Apple TV + jumped in with a nomination for Best Animated Feature (Wolf walkers) and better sound (Tom Hanks’ Doggy style). And while Disney had clearly been hoping for more theatrical releases, it can boast that Disney + got nominations for Soul (including the best animated film), Mulan (effects and costumes) and the short film Terrier.

The pandemic has also led to a slew of gray area films that may have been defined by their streaming releases, but technically hit theaters first or at the same time. From disney Forward (nominated for Best Animated Feature) only made a brief appearance in theaters before the pandemic dictated a streaming version. Multi-nominated Judas and the Black Messiah, meanwhile, was a HBO Max and theatrical release.

There is no guarantee that these services will be cleaned up at the Oscars themselves, which will take place on April 25. Netflix has just two statuettes during the 2020 ceremony despite the big bets on Martin Scorsese Irish. However, the large number of nominations suggests that they will fare better than before. And we wouldn’t be surprised if streaming is at least as important for the Oscars 2022 – vaccinations have raised hopes that people will seriously return to theaters in 2021, but there’s no doubt that home viewing will have. always the priority.
