Usually, a company publishes information late on a friday night is a bad sign, but Microsoft has gone the other way. After starting Friday with awkwardly announcing revised price for Xbox Live Gold which would have doubled the cost of new Xbox accounts to access multiplayer, it rolled back. Assuming that “We made a mistake today and you were right to let us know”, the company announced that not only the prices will not change, but it is also working on enabling free multiplayer for free games like Fortnite and Apex Legends and his next title Infinite Halo.
It’s unclear how long it will take for the free portion of the ad to light up, but since it’s already free on PlayStation Network, that can’t happen soon enough. Even with the existence of the Game Pass, asking for $ 120 per year for new players would have made Xbox by far a second-class multiplayer experience for new and existing customers.
It’s good that Microsoft has reconsidered the move (after shipping $ 60 worth of 6-month-old Xbox Live cards that now look like collectibles), but if they really wanted to turn the tide in the console wars, multiplayer free for all would be a better choice. Hey, they seem open to suggestions, so why not ask?

As promised, the first of two early 2021 fixes for the struggling Cyberpunk 2077 from CD Projekt Red has arrived. This updates the game to version 1.1 on PC, consoles, and Stadia, and according to the notes, it lays the groundwork for future updates, while also addressing memory usage and crashing issues. These fixes are meant to make the game more playable on PS4 and Xbox One consoles, and the one slated for February will apparently be more meaningful.
