Sheldon Adelson, the American casino mogul and prominent Republican donor and philanthropist, has died of a long illness, his wife said on Tuesday. He was 87 years old.
Mr. Adelson was the founding billionaire of Las Vegas Sands and is credited with turning the city into a gaming and resort destination. He was also an influential owner of regional newspapers in Las Vegas and Israel.
In recent years, he was a close confidant of US President Donald Trump and has wielded power behind the scenes, including successfully urging Mr. Trump to push for the relocation of the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Last week, Mr. Adelson took sick leave from his role as President and CEO of Las Vegas Sands for the treatment of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, according to one of his journals, the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
