There’s only one night left – and two games – until the 2021 Final Four field is over.
There’s a well-defined vibe on the West Coast heading into the second half of the Elite Eight round: the 6-seeded USC will face first-seeded Gonzaga in the West region, followed by an Eastern Region game between 11-seeded UCLA and 1-seeded Michigan. . The Bulldogs were expected to be here after hosting the only unbeaten season in Division I basketball, but the addition of the two Los Angeles teams came as a surprise; this is the first time that the two teams have participated in the Elite Eight in the tournament’s history.
USC is a big underdog against Mark Few and Gonzaga, for whom perfection is the only goal worth it this season. The Bruins are at the dawn of history: another win and they would become just the second First Four team – after VCU in 2011 – to make the Final Four. Their unlikely run included victories over Michigan State’s top four opponents, the 6-seeded BYU, 14-seeded Abilene Christian and 2-seeded Alabama; what’s one more victory at this point? As for their opponent, Michigan weathered the loss of Isaiah Livers by wielding 16-seeded Texas Southern, battling a pesky 8th-seeded LSU and returning to dominance against 4-seeded Florida State.
Tuesday’s action certainly creates an opportunity for chaos in the brackets of March madness, if there are any still worth saving. Of course, no one would be surprised if the two seeded 1s won their respective clashes. Can the Mobley brothers fend off the trio of Suggs, Kispert and Timme? Younger brother Evan started the tournament with two double-doubles and still averages 12.3 points and 10.7 rebounds per game after dropping two rebounds from a third against Oregon. Isaiah Mobley was slightly more proficient in scoring (15.0 points per game), but he was also a force on the boards, averaging 6.3 rebounds and one block per game.
Will it matter against Gonzaga’s big guns? Timme has just finished 30- and 22-point games and is averaging 20.7 points per game in the tournament – while also averaging 8.3 rebounds. Suggs, Gonzaga’s most talented player, has been less powerful on the scoreboard but still averages 10.3 points per game. Then there’s Kispert, who averages 17 points per tournament game in addition to five rebounds, one assist and one steal per game.

UCLA could be the tournament’s surprise if they handle yet another upsetting of a single-digit seed, their third of the tournament. The Bruins are led by Jaime Jaquez (13.3 ppg, 7.7 apg, 1.7 spg) and Johnny Juzang (22 ppg, 44.9 field goal percentage), but they also had some excellent game play.
