A frustrated Alex de Minaur admits he and his coach have some tough conversations ahead of them after the Australian fell in the third round of the Australian Open last night.
De Minaur, who has yet to make the third round of the Australian Open, has been dominated at all levels, going down 6-4 6-3 6-4 against Italian world No.17 Fabio Fognini.
Asked what his plans are going forward and how he plans to cope with tonight’s loss, de Minaur admitted he would need some time to sleep before he and his coach assess the performance.
“I am sure that tomorrow I will have a good talk with the coach and we will see what the next plans are,” he told reporters after the match.
“I think at the moment if we’re talking about something, it probably won’t be too good in the heat of the moment.
“So I’m going to have to sleep on it and tomorrow we’ll come out with a game plan. Because, listen, at the end of the day it’s still February. I mean, we’ve got a long year ahead.”
The 21-year-old then admitted that he expects conversations with his coach to turn ‘heated’ as he tries to overcome the emotional pain of last night’s loss.
“No, I think we will definitely talk about the game. It will happen. And, yes, it could get heated in the sense of my frustration,” he added.
“I mean, I don’t like going out there and feeling like I can’t do much.
“You know, it’s not a good feeling. So I have to look at the things to improve, the things to work on.
“I mean, like I’ve been doing my whole career. Just as there’s no point in sitting down and trying to sort out the rest right away, because, you know, we have time.
“I’ll do that tomorrow. We’ll talk. We’ll see what the plans are. If we stay here for a few days, if we fly away, all of that. We’ll have to wait and see.”
