Tanveer Sangha, a young leg-spinning sensation, is making headlines on Ricky Ponting’s bolter list for the T20 Australian tour of New Zealand next month.
The Australian T20 squad is expected to be filled with new BBL talent as the test team is touring South Africa at the same time.
Sydney Thunder star Sangha is the fourth wicket taker in the 2020-2021 BBL with 20 at an average of 16.5 and an economy rate of 7.95
A recent Australian Under-19 squad graduate Ponting said Sangha was more ready for international cricket than fellow BBL spin-out Peter Hatzoglou (Melbourne Renegades).
Australia’s T20 squad are expected to be without test spinners Nathan Lyon and Mitch Swepson, while Ashton Agar is in doubt over an injury.

Adam Zampa will be the first choice for the T20 leg spinner.
“I think it’s a bit early for Hatzoglou to play international cricket … but Tanveer Sangha is another question,” Australian legend Ponting told cricket.com.au.
“He’s a young guy who seems to be pretty confident and in control of what he’s doing, and he’s playing good balls, so he could be someone they would look to get into the system. .
“It’s difficult for the youngsters who are spinning their legs because they arrive quickly and everyone is excited about their talent, a lot of the time they are introduced early and they can have a few setbacks afterwards.
“But they might have to think about it.”
Ponting added that Josh Philippe, the Sydney Sixers’ pistol, was also prepared for his international T20 debut, although Perth Scorchers star Josh Inglis was a dark horse contender.

“He’s the other one that I would like to see at some point because I think he’s a real talent,” Ponting said.
“He and Philippe are probably going for the same place – Inglis is probably considered to be a better goalkeeper, Philippe could be a bit more explosive at the top of the order.”
“But damn it, I think Inglis has something.
“He plays the spin beautifully… he played Rashid Khan on his ear, so there’s that side there.
“And he hit the top of the range in first class cricket for WA, so obviously there has to be good technique behind what he can do in the white ball.
“I know Painey (Tim Paine) and ‘Hadds’ (Brad Haddin) spent quite a bit of time with the goalies and Hadds said he was very, very good with the gloves.
“He’s got a couple hundred in the Shield … so with those two and (Alex) Carey, there’s no shortage of goalkeepers / batsmen.”
Ponting has also named fit Adelaide Strikers paceman Wes Agar as another uncapped BBL standout who would be in selection to face the Black Caps in five T20s from February 22 in Christchurch.
But he can miss out on Sean Abbott, Kane Richardson, Daniel Sams, Riley Meredith, Andrew Tye and Jason Behrendorff.
“Wes Agar is a dark horse, definitely,” Ponting said.
“On the back of what he did, he got four more wickets the other night and he’s one of Big Bash’s main wicket takers.”
