Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
Aside from Margot Robbie’s terrific comeback as Harley herself, Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez) and Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) are all perfectly molded and totally magnetic when put on. onscreen – with Winstead’s Huntress proving to be an unexpected scene thief in her relatively limited screen time. Combined with Ella Jay Basco’s Cassandra Cain and Ewan McGregor masturbating landscapes as Roman Sionis, Birds of Prey features the best ensemble cast of any DCEU to date. our full review of birds of prey!
Da 5 bloods
Delroy Lindo, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock Jr. and Clarke Peters are the headliners of a truly impressive cast in Da 5 Bloods. While the performance is exceptional across the board (including an appearance from the always welcome Jean Reno), it’s all held together by an absolutely unmissable performance from Lindo.

Hamilton
As promised by the endless hype, Hamilton comes to life with incredible performances. Lin-Manuel Miranda is in turn mocking, happy, hurt, and wrathful as the eponymous hero. Renee Elise Goldsberry is fascinating as a witty and sad Angelica, who delivers sly and swift lyrics with thrilling confidence. Phillipa Soo is hopeful, helpless, then heartbreaking as Hamilton’s wife, while Leslie Odom Jr. steals the show as the play’s self-proclaimed villain. Refusing to let us hate Burr, Odom gloats as the narrator of the play, dealing with the role of ringmaster in a three-ring circus that has dramatic origins in the United States. Although played at inexpensive seats, these theatrical performances do not suffer onscreen due to the expectations of a musical.

Ma Rainey’s black background
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom has a solid set – especially Viola Davis as Ma herself. But the movie is undoubtedly Chadwick Boseman’s from start to finish, as he plays the youngest member of Ma Rainey’s band, an old-fashioned outfit consisting of Slow Drag (Michael Potts) to stand-up bass, Toledo (Glynn Turman) on piano, and Cutler (Colman Domingo) on trombone, all of which give fantastic performances.

The Chicago 7 trial
As is often the case with actors who get a chance to talk about Aaron Sorkin’s dialogue, everyone involved manages to make it a meal in The Trial of the Chicago 7. This is a cast of stars across the board, with not a weak link to be found. While there are times when Eddie Redmayne and Sacha Baron Cohen seem to struggle to find an American accent to wrap these words around, they still effectively embody the poles of the ideological spectrum within the Seven (and within the anti- war itself.). Meanwhile, the poles of the justice system itself are represented by Mark Rylance as defense attorney William Kunstler and Frank Langella as judge Julius Hoffman, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II brings a particularly memorable turn in as Bobby Seale, the co-founder of the Black Panther. Party.
