A note from Biden’s new chief of staff shows the president-elect is seeking to quickly reverse several of Trump’s policies.
On his first day in office, US President-elect Joe Biden plans to issue a number of executive orders, including one overturning the controversial travel ban in several Muslim-majority countries.
According to a note released Saturday by Ron Klain, Biden’s new White House chief of staff, the new US administration will launch a series of reversals on policies implemented by US President Donald Trump during his first 10 days in office. .
These also include new coronavirus prevention efforts, the return of the Paris agreement on climate change and immigration legislation allowing millions of people to obtain citizenship.
Shortly after taking office in 2017, Trump issued an executive order barring travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States.
This ordinance, however, has been overhauled several times amid legal challenges and a version of it was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2018.
‘Poison of hate’
Analysts say the ban could easily be overturned because it was issued by executive order and presidential proclamation, although lawsuits by conservative opponents may delay the process.
“As President, I will work with you to wring the poison of hatred from our society to honor your contributions and seek your ideas. My administration will be like America, with American Muslims serving at all levels, ”Biden said in October.
Other reversals include extending pandemic-related limits on evictions and student loan payments, the imposition of mask warrants on federal property and interstate travel, as well as a solution to reunite the children of ‘immigrants separated from their families, the memo said.
Biden also plans to submit new legislation providing for the naturalization of 11 million undocumented migrants currently living in the country, in addition to a pledge to vaccinate 100 million people in his first 100 days in office.
Biden previously said he would push Congress to approve a $ 1.9 billion stimulus package to tackle the economic recession caused by the coronavirus.
