Rose goes on to say additional tweets that the extras had apparently said they would dissect frogs, but introduced themselves to “real dead kittens” on set and had to stay and film the scheduled scenes. Variety has received a statement from HBO Max on the situation and the company denies that the actors were not given advance warning.
“Genera + ion portrays the unfiltered experiences of high school students and is drawn from many formative moments in the lives of the show’s writers,” the statement read. The production recently filmed scenes depicting a biology class assignment involving the dissection of animal specimens. These were ethically obtained in consultation with American Humane through a biological supply company that works with schools . “
“Everyone involved was informed in advance that this would be a sensitive scene involving a real dissection; the assistant directors spoke regularly with all the participants on the set, and two background actors who expressed their discomfort were released with full pay, “the statement continued. “However, after further discussion with the creative team, the scene is in the process of being redesigned and will not appear in the series. We deeply regret that this has happened.”
Rose also wrote on Twitter that at the end of the second day of filming, the crew were informed that a cameraman on set had tested positive for COVID-19, “as the icing on the cake of their traumatic experience.” Rose wrote that the positive case “should have been disclosed sooner, but (HBO Max) clearly wanted their photos of these kittens.”
Sources close to Variety confirmed to the post that a member of the crew had, in fact, tested positive for COVID-19, and that person is currently in isolation. The sources told Variety the team learned of the positive test result after filming was over, contradicting Rose’s tweet. The show will resume filming when it is safe to do so under safety guidelines, according to Variety.Dunham, who is a creative producer and executive on the show, only heard about the incident on February 6, according to one of Variety’s sources.
“I am committed in my life and work to the treatment of animals, principled, humane and ethical,” reads a statement from Dunham. “I never use dead animals in any of my work, and I wasn’t on set or knew they were used in a recently shot scene depicting a biology class assignment. I fully support the scene being edited out of the series. “
Genera + ion is slated for release this spring on HBO Max.
