This article contains spoilers for the romance options in the three Mass Effect games.

Legendary Mass Effect Edition is a complete overhaul of Commander Shepard’s interstellar exploits across three iconic games, the first of which landed on store shelves in November 2007. At the time, George W. Bush was firmly in the White House, Fergie was still topical, and even- Sexual marriage would not be legalized by the federal government in the United States for eight years. Mass effect 2 appeared in 2010, and 3 struck only two years later.

Shortly after the launch of the first Mass Effect, Fox News aired a segment titled “Sexbox?” where the hosts discussed the immorality of the title’s sex scenes with wide-eyed shock. The Talking Heads falsely claimed the game featured full digital nudity, and they were dismayed at the inclusion of a non-straight romance option, where players could seduce Liara T’Soni, a one-gender alien. .

This bit from Fox News permanently altered the trajectory of the Mass Effect lore. According to Mass effect 2 writer Brian Kindregan, the sequel was set to feature at least one pansexual character, Jack, including the ability to seduce her as either a male or female Shepard. This element was discarded late in the development of Mass effect 2, in direct response to criticism from Fox News, Kindregan said The player in January 2021. Ultimately, she was only available as a romance option in Shepard’s male playthroughs.

“Back then … maybe more people around the world thought there was a connection between reality and what is being discussed on Fox News,” Kindregan said. “The development team of Mass effect 2 were a fairly progressive and open-minded team. But I think there was concern at levels high enough that if Mass Effect, who only had one homosexual relationship, Liara – who on paper was technically not a homosexual relationship as she was of a mono-gender species – I think there was concern that if that attracted fire, that Mass effect 2 had to be a little careful.

Legendary Mass Effect Edition, which lands on May 14, is a chance for BioWare to revamp the original games for modern hardware and sensibilities. Some fans hoped for a wider range of non-straight romance options, given the advancements in LGBT + rights and visibility in the United States since 2007. However, as developers tweak things like combat, textures and lighting, they don’t affect the story. The original romance options of the trilogy will continue in the 2021 edition, Homophobia intact.

BioWare did not address same-sex romance options during the virtual press event it hosted last week, despite a handful of specific questions. After the event, a spokesperson told Engadget: “The narrative options for the series have not changed from the original trilogy to Legendary edition. “

With the launch of Mass effect 3 in 2012, BioWare implemented gay romance trees for male and female shepherds. In terms of non-heterosexual relationships, here’s what the Mass Effect series – and the Legendary edition – has to offer:

  • Mass Effect: Male and female Shepard can have sex with Liara T’Soni, a mono-gender Asari character, and receive the achievement Paramour.

  • Mass effect 2: Female Shepard may have sex with female character Kelly Chambers, although this does not translate into a Paramour achievement or preclude other relationships. Male and female Shepard may attempt to have sex with the asari characters Morinth and Samara, although Morinth kills Shepard before they perform the deed, and Samara ultimately rejects the advances.

  • Mass effect 3: Male Shepard can have sex with Steve Cortez or Kaiden Alenko, while female Shepard can sleep with Samantha Traynor, Kelly or Liara, receiving Paramour achievement for each. FemShep may also have sex with female character Diana Allers, although that doesn’t come close to a feat.

Legendary Mass Effect Edition is a redesign of the entire trilogy, including the Extended Cut ending for the third game and every bit of the DLC series. The games will run in 4K UHD with HDR; character creation received a full upgrade and combat in the first title has been fine-tuned. The Legendary edition will also address long-standing serial issues, such as ridiculously long elevator rides and lack of PC gamepad support.

At last week’s media event, Kevin Meek, Artistic Director of Environment and Characters, described the importance of getting proper portrayal with the Legendary editionoverhauled character creation system.

“One of the first things we really wanted to do was, throughout the trilogy, unify the options,” he said. “If something exists in 3, we want it to exist in 1, and we want that to be consistent. And then also, we really wanted to broaden the choices for things like skin color and hair styles that just weren’t wide enough originally to support the diversity of our player base or to give fans the ability to create that Shepard they really wanted to play with.

In fact, playing with this character will be a different story – or rather, exactly the same.
