Glenn maxwell continued his glorious summer with the Blade in Hobart tonight, but his 70-run blitz from just 37 balls wasn’t enough to bring the Melbourne Stars home against the Hurricanes.
The Stars appeared to be flying towards victory against the Men in Purple as Maxwell exploded his second half-century of the tournament, but from the moment the Melbourne skipper lost his wicket to 5-112 – chasing 165 to win – the visitors’ the heats have taken an extraordinary dive.
The Stars lost four wickets for just 26 races when Maxwell was back in theaters, as the Hurricanes headed for a 21-point victory.
Right-hand paceman Nathan Ellis spearheaded the Hurricanes’ response, knocking out Liam Hatcher and Lance Morris and conceding just 11 points on his four times, while quick Scott Boland (3-22) also benefited of an effective night with the ball.
But it was Maxwell who provided the greatest entertainment for those in the stands of Bellerive Oval, taking off six fours and five sixes as he reached the top rung of the Big Bash League 2020-21 race standings. .
The right-hander amassed 249 points at an average of 62.25 to lead Shaun Marsh, Colin Ingram, Callum Ferguson and Alex Hales.
Maxwell’s brilliant BBL campaign followed his phenomenal form in the limited matches against India, which saw him plunder 167 points in three one-day internationals at an 83.5 average, before taking off a 54-point inning in the final T20 international game.
