Sony provided a first look at the new controllers for PlayStation VR 2, which will combine finger tracking with the haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the PS5 to provide “a much deeper sense of presence and a stronger sense of immersion in virtual reality experiences.” Revealed on the PlayStation Blog, the new controllers ditch the old-fashioned PlayStation Move wand design for a more ergonomic set of peripherals that fit the user’s hands. The new controllers have an “orb” shape and allow for a more natural fit, without straining the player’s fingers.

As for the new features available, the peripherals will adopt many of the best features of the PS5 DualSense, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback to enhance immersion and add tension to the inputs.

Finger touch detection will also be implemented, similar to Valve’s Knuckle controllers. Essentially, the controller will be able to detect your fingers without needing to press any buttons. Sony says it will allow “more natural gestures” while playing the game.

The controllers will also feature a tracking ring at their base and will be tracked by the PlayStation VR 2 headset instead of the PlayStation camera. Each side has an analog stick, a grip button, a trigger button, and two button inputs. The left controller also has a Create button while the right controller will have the Options button.Sony says the prototypes of these new controllers “will soon be in the hands of the development community”, adding that “there is still a lot to share on the next generation of VR on PS5”.

The PlayStation VR 2 was confirmed in February this year, where we learned that the new headset will connect to the PS5 via a single wire and offer better resolution and a better field of view. Sony has also said it will not launch this year.
